Free Inquiry #1 Exploring My Project and How I Get Started
For my Free Inquiry project I have chosen to do airdry clay sculpting. Working with clay was always one of my favorite activities to do when I was in school. It was always so exciting to come in the next day and see how it turned out after drying then getting the opportunity to paint it then getting to take the finished product home. I chose to work with clay because of my previous experience and my curiosity about how far I can go with it and how I will be able to utilize these skills in my classrooms in the future. Playing with clay can be very beneficial for young learners as it helps develop motor skills and can give them a hands-on method to learn in many different subjects. I’ve worked with clay a little before but always stopped before I could progress very far in my skills. This time I hope to develop them and hopefully begin a new lifelong hobby!
How Do I Start?
I plan on tackling this project by starting off small and learning simple techniques and methods to manipulate and sculpt clay. YouTube is probably going to be my best friend throughout this process! To acquire resources for this project I have found a kit off amazon that is affordable and I can get a tub of clay from the grocery store. I hope to begin by creating smaller creations drawing some inspirations from the pictures below found on Pinterest as well as from the Instagram account bloomibel who makes some adorable creations. I hope to get creative with it and make fun knick-knacks for decoration but also create some objects I can utilize, such as a pencil holder or trinket tray! Once I feel comfortable with simpler shapes and concepts, I’ll slowly begin with more complicated and possibly bigger sculptures that challenge my skills so I can work my way up.

What Will the Outcome Look Like?
By the end of this learning journey, I hope to be able to create some creative and usable items that are sturdy and fun! I hope to be able to build my skills for working with clay so I’m able to just sit down and create something from my own mind whenever I feel without having to look to a tutorial. I also hope to build skills that I can bring into teaching and bring this creative and fun activity for my future classrooms as a teacher!
